A wondrous, captivating, and deeply moving allegory about the journey we all go through in life, about love and family, about war and resilience, about how we live in poverty, this world and how we leave it.
Some time ago, perhaps before you were born, a young girl was walking in her garden. She could be called Mary – that’s what most stories say. Mary is a little taller than other girls her age and has curly brown hair. She’s pretty skinny because she doesn’t always have enough to eat. She likes honey and whistles and blues and exploration.
This is the story of Mary, a young girl born in a beautiful city full of rose gardens and flying kites. When she was very young, Mary met Lanmo, a glittering golden snake who became her best friend. The snake visited Mary many times; he sees her city change, becoming sadder as the bombs fall and the war escalates. He sees Mary and her family leaving their home, he sees her growing up and he sees her falling in love. But Lanmo knew that the day would come when he could no longer visit Mary, when his fate would separate them, and he wondered if having a friend was worth the pain of knowing that you would lose them.
This is like another kind of fairy tale. Little Mary befriends a small snake, who makes her life better. In the end, Mary is an old woman who lives a good life in a peaceful land. Along the way, we receive the eerie controversy of war, politics, and human stupidity wrapped up in strangely agreeable sentiments. Quite charming.
The same magic as in The Little Prince exists in this delightful book. Friendship, love, and death are delicately handled topics. Everyone should read this book. It doesn’t take long but it will enrich your life.
