A gothic haunted house story unlike Shirley Jackson’s House on the Hill, what impressed me most was the quality of the writing. While I rarely write reviews, I feel compelled to say how impressed I am with both the quality of writing by Sarah Waters and the professional storytelling by Simon Vance, my favorite storyteller. This is a worthwhile option.

Marvel at the writer’s talent; Her storytelling skills are top notch. She evokes a perfect Victorian setting and the characters are unique and complex, the book reveals a series of glimpses into the nature of each of them but never reveals the whole, events. However, the real art is to use hints of illusory presence to create fear. It’s a ghost story, a love story and interwoven with allusions to class distinctions and important historical and cultural events. Highly recommend this book.
