From the author of The Song of the Jade Lily comes a thrilling tale of a family secret that leads to a legendary treasure.
Why would someone bury a box of treasures and gems and never return?
Currently. When the famous American jewelry historian Kate Kirby received a call about Cheapside jewelry, she knew she was about to have the experience of a lifetime.
But a trip to London forces Kate to uncover secrets long buried by her own family. Back in Boston, Kate discovered a series of sketches in her great-grandmother’s newspapers linking her great-grandmother Essie to the Cheapside collection. Could these sketches hold the key to Essie’s secret life in Edwardian London?
In the summer of 1912, Essie Murphy, an impoverished Irish immigrant, happened to visit her brother when a worker’s pickaxe pierced the floor of an old apartment house on Cheapside, near the Cathedral St. Paul in London. The craftsmen discover a treasure – from Ottoman pendants to Elizabethan and Jacobean gems – and then the finds disappear again! Can these gems – especially one – change the fortunes of Essie and her sisters?
Together with photographer Marcus Holt, Kate Kirby pursues the history of Cheapside gems and jewelry, particularly the story of the champlevé enamel small diamond ring. Soon everything Kate believes about her family, gems, and herself will be threatened.
Based on a gripping true story, The Lost Jewels is a gripping historical fiction that will keep listeners engaged from start to finish full of surprises and unforgettable moments.
I’m impressed with the stories the author was able to grow from a single piece of jewelry found. She provided a very interesting time to learn. Although I read non-linear stories so it’s a bit confusing because I stopped reading, but if you read through it, it will be great.
I am a dedicated fan of historical fiction and this book, while perhaps a tad more fiction than historical was so well done! The novel revolves around the real-life treasure horde known as the Cheapside Horde, found in the basement of a London home many years ago. The true history of this remarkable discovery has never been deduced, but this fictional story built around the find is beautifully rendered. Poverty, disease, alcoholism, the blight of a besmirched first love, death, love and redemption weave through the story of a family that survives and thrives.
