The Lost Quilter / An Elm Creek Quilts Novel (The Elm Creek Quilts Book 14) – Audiobook Online By: Jennifer Chiaverini

Master Quilter Sylvia Bergstrom Compson treasures an antique blanket that goes by three names – Birds in the Air, after all; the runaway blanket, named after the woman who sewed it; and Elm Creek Quilt, after the place its creator longed to return to.

That quilter was Joanna, a runaway slave who traveled by Underground Railroad to safety in 1859 at Elm Creek Ranch.

Though Joanna’s freedom was short-lived – she was forced by slavers to return Josiah Chester’s plantation in Virginia – she left the Bergstrom family one of the most precious gifts, children, her son. Hans and Anneke Bergstrom, along with their maiden aunt Gerda, raised the boy as their own, and the secret of his identity died down their generation. Now it’s up to Sylvia – based on Gerda’s diary and Joanna’s quilt – to connect Joanna’s past with present – day Elm Creek Manor.

Just as Joanna could not have foreseen that, generations later, her blanket would become the subject of so much speculation and wonder, Sylvia and her friends could never have imagined the events events that Joanna witnessed in her life. Punished for escaping by being sold to her master’s brother in Edisto Island, South Carolina, Joanna grieves the loss of her son and resolves to run away once more, to reunite with him one day. It was in the Free North. Farther south than she’s ever been before, however, she still finds allies, friends, and even love in the slave neighborhood of Oak Grove, a cotton plantation. where her needle and thread skills were quickly appreciated.

Overcoming hardship and deprivation, Joanna dreams of freedom and returning to Elm Creek Ranch. Determined to remember every landmark on the north road, Joanna cuts a piece of blanket left over from her family’s sewing, concealing the clues in meticulous stitching. Later, working as a seamstress for the new bride of a Confederate officer, Joanna moved to Charleston, where the secrets she kept would influence the fate of a nation, and her ability and bravery. her help her help the country and the people she loves most of.

The knowledge that crumbs can be joined and sewn into simple lines – beautiful both in and of themselves and what they represent and what they can achieve – carried Joanna through the days. dark. Feeding herself and her family through Civil War and Reconstruction ingenuity and artistry, Joanna left behind a remarkable artistic legacy that, in the end, allowed Sylvia to discover the fate of the lost quilt long lost.

I always hoped to hear more about Joanna, a runaway slave who was recaptured. I worried for her when she was brought back to the plantation. Her story is beautiful and sad as Joanna continues to fight for her freedom. She is one of many brave women who have fought against this system to create a better life for her children and future generations. This is a powerful story.

As usual, this book is not a disappointment. I love this author and this Elm Creek Quilt series is always fun to read. I learn a lot thanks to all the historical facts included in the stories and I never get bored no matter the time, the character the book is about. It’s always like meeting the old ones again old friend.
