The Mammoth Hunters By Jean M. Auel – Audiobook Online
The Mammoth Hunters is the third book in the Earth’s Children series written by Jean M. Auel. Published in 1985, it continues the story of Ayla, a young woman who lived during the Paleolithic era. The series is known for its detailed portrayal of prehistoric life and its exploration of human evolution.
Set in Europe approximately 25,000 years ago, The Mammoth Hunters follows Ayla as she reunites with Jondalar, her mate, after a long and arduous journey. They arrive at Jondalar’s home, the Ninth Cave of the Zelandonii, where Ayla must adapt to a new way of life and navigate the complex social dynamics of the tribe.
The book delves into various themes such as love, jealousy, cultural differences, and the struggle for acceptance. Ayla’s unique upbringing among the Clan, a group of Neanderthals, sets her apart from the others in the tribe. She possesses knowledge and skills that both intrigue and intimidate those around her.
One of the central conflicts in The Mammoth Hunters revolves around Ayla’s relationship with Ranec, a talented sculptor who becomes infatuated with her. This creates tension between Ayla and Jondalar, as they navigate their own feelings of jealousy and insecurity. The love triangle adds an element of drama to the story and tests the strength of their bond.
As Ayla becomes more integrated into the Zelandonii tribe, she also faces challenges from those who view her as an outsider. Some members of the tribe are suspicious of her abilities and question her loyalty. However, Ayla’s determination and resourcefulness help her overcome these obstacles and gain respect within the community.
Throughout the book, Auel provides vivid descriptions of prehistoric life, including hunting techniques, tool-making processes, and spiritual rituals. The author’s extensive research into archaeology and anthropology is evident in her attention to detail, making the story feel authentic and immersive.
The Mammoth Hunters also explores the concept of art and its significance in early human societies. Ranec’s sculptures and Ayla’s cave paintings serve as a means of expression and communication, highlighting the importance of creativity in human development.
In addition to the interpersonal relationships and cultural dynamics, The Mammoth Hunters also delves into the natural world. Ayla’s deep connection with animals, particularly horses, plays a significant role in the narrative. The book showcases the bond between humans and animals, emphasizing their mutual reliance for survival.
Overall, The Mammoth Hunters is a captivating continuation of the Earth’s Children series. It combines elements of romance, adventure, and historical fiction to create a richly detailed portrayal of prehistoric life.

The Mammoth Hunters
- Earth’s Children, Book 3
- Narrated by: Sandra Burr
An epic novel about love, knowledge, jealousy and hard choices.
Ayla, the indie heroine of the Children of Earth series, sets out from the valley on the back of Whinney, the horse she has tamed. With her was Jondalar, the tall, handsome, blond man she’d taken care of again and fell in love with. Together they meet Mamutoi – Mammoth Hunter – who are like Ayla. But for Ayla, who was raised by the Cave Bear Clan, they were “The Others”. She approaches them with a mixture of fear and curiosity.
It was the ivory-carving master Mamutoi – the dark-skinned, flirtatious, artistic, charismatic Ranec – whom Ayla found herself most attracted to. Because of her uncanny animal control, healing skills, and the magical flint she discovered, Ayla was adopted into the Mammoth Hearth by Mamut, the ancient mage of the Great Mother Earth.
Ayla finds herself torn between her intense feelings for Ranec and her intense love for the incredibly jealous and insecure Jondalar. It wasn’t until after the great mammoth hunt, when Ayla’s life was threatened, that a fateful decision was made.
Jean Auel is an exceptional writer. Although the book is set 30,000 years ago, Jean still demonstrates a mastery of modern day psychology. She covers all the topics of racism, sexism, and political understanding in the pages of this delightful novel. When you read a book of this quality and understanding of human nature, you can’t help but realize that Jean herself must have been an exceptional parent. Her wisdom is obvious.
Well thought out and engaging. Always a surprise in the next chapter.
Vivid characters and great description of the surroundings. Great
