I think this author has potential and I love that in the fantasy genre, she’s finally doing something I haven’t really read before, discussing gender and fluidity. Also enjoyed reading from a woman’s point of view with one of the main characters. That said I found the book a bit difficult to follow, I constantly had to refer to the Appendix to remember races, genders, worlds, pronouns, etc, “normal” to keep to read it seamlessly. That could just be me but otherwise I think it read fine if a bit slower than I normally would.
I’m rounding up here, because the premise is so compelling for a fantasy world. The idea that there is a mirror world, with exact replicas (actually an alternate version) of each person, and that one world can conquer the other just by killing each key person, is real. attractive. The challenge is that this world – building becomes a bit unwieldy and confusing, given the juxtaposition of religions, cultures, and groups. There are some very strong female characters, which I appreciate, and a good balance between the belligerent “villain” and the virtuous “hero”, and the blurred lines that come and go. When a person realizes that the enemy of an enemy is now an ally. Good potential.
