The Monster in the Lake is the second book in the Kit the Wizard series, written by Louie Stowell and illustrated by Davide Ortu. The story follows a young wizard named Kit who has just started her studies at the Amesbury School of Magic. When Kit and her friends investigate a mysterious monster sighting in the school lake, they discover that a powerful and dangerous wizard from Kit’s past is responsible. The wizard is looking for a powerful magical artifact, and Kit may be the only one who can stop him. With the help of her friends and her newly-acquired magical skills, Kit sets out to find the artifact before the wizard does. However, their quest becomes more complicated when the monster from the lake joins their search and they realize that the artifact is tied to the history of the school itself. As they uncover more secrets, Kit and her friends face challenges and obstacles that threaten to derail their mission. They must work together to save the school, prevent the wizard from achieving his sinister goal, and confront their own fears and doubts. The Monster in the Lake is an exciting and magical adventure that explores the themes of friendship, courage, and the true meaning of heroism.
When wild magic begins to trouble the park, the witch Kit and her friends investigate – and find themselves on another journey to save the world. The lively and witty sequel to The Dragon in the Library.
Kit may be the youngest witch ever, but she certainly doesn’t feel like the best witch. Her magic is constantly malfunctioning, and other strange things are happening as well: talking animals, exploding fireballs, and a very strange new appearance at the local park. Even the Dogon (half dog, half dragon) is drooling! So Kit and her two best friends – animal-whispering Alita and studious Josh – start with librarian Faith to investigate this wild magic that is causing so much shock. Their journey takes them to a lake in Scotland, where they meet an environmentally conscious witch and some very grumpy mermaids (careful, they pinch). But the danger is bigger than they imagined and will need everyone’s help to get things right again. This action – packed adventure is packed with humor, a diverse cast, and delightful illustrations.
What a great book with excellent characters and lots of magic and fun. In this story, wild magic is going wild – apprentice witch Kit can’t control her fireballs, the animals in the park are all talking, a Smaller Nessie in the local lake Phuong and the mermaids are rebelling. Something strange is happening. To get to the bottom of it, Kit and her friends must travel to Scotland to try to convince the mermaids to bring Lizzie, Little Nessie, back to their shared lake. Of course, there’s a nasty magical reason for the mermaids’ problems and the team must work it out before they get caught up in a nasty magical curse. Can they do it. Read the story to find out.
We enjoyed it as much as the first time. It’s amazing how Louie Stowell managed to pack all the adventurous, funny and positive messages in one book. It’s rare to find a children’s book that both me and my daughter love. The characters are some of my favorite characters I’ve read in children’s books.
