The Most Precious Of Cargoes / A Tale – Audiobook Online
“The Most Precious of Cargoes” is a short story by Jean – Claude Grumberg that tells the story of a group of Jewish prisoners in a concentration camp during World War II. The story begins with a woman giving birth to a baby girl in the camp. Realizing the danger the baby is in, some of the prisoners decide to smuggle her out of the camp and into the nearby town. They hide the baby in a bundle of clothes and give her to a stranger in the hopes that she will be taken to safety. The stranger is reluctant to take on the responsibility, but eventually agrees to call upon the help of a woman, who takes the baby in and raises her as her own. The story explores themes of sacrifice, hope, and the lengths that people will go to protect and care for one another, even in the darkest of times. The baby is symbolic of the potential for new life and the possibility of a brighter future, despite the horrors of war. As the prisoners continue to suffer and die in the concentration camp, the gift of the baby serves as a reminder that humanity and compassion still exist in the world, even in the midst of unspeakable cruelty.
The Most Precious Of Cargoes / A Tale, Audiobook Online By: Jean-Claude Grumberg
Set at the height of World War II, a powerful and unsettling story about a woodcutter and his wife who find a mysterious parcel thrown from a moving train run over.
Once upon a time, in a vast forest there lived a woodcutter and his wife. The woodcutter was very poor and war broke out all around them, making it difficult for them to get food on the table. Yet every night his wife prayed to have children.
A Jewish father travels on a train holding his twin children. His wife no longer has enough milk to feed both children. Hoping to save them both, he wrapped his daughter in a shawl and threw her into the woods.
While looking for food, the wife found a bundle, a baby girl wrapped in a shawl. Although she knew raising this child could lead to her own death, she brought the child home.
Set in the horrors of the Holocaust and told with fairytale-like lyricism, The Most Precious of Cargoes is an allegory of family and redemption that reminds us that humans can be saved found in the most inhumane places.
Although Jean-Claude Grumberg’s most precious commodity is only a 126-page novel, I was intrigued by the premise of a baby being thrown from a train during the Second World War. What a thought-provoking and emotional story. Written in a rather fairy – tale style, it may sound strange at first, but it is certainly not a fairy tale. Sadly, the facts are all too true. Traits are awesome makes me feel like I know them one by one and believe me I will never forget any of them. You will be challenged to rise to the next level after reading THE BEST THING OF GOODS.
I can only describe this book as a tragically true Grimm fairy tale. Written in a dreamy way, it is a very strange thing to pass a review that gives it great credibility. It’s about the Holocaust but written like a fairy tale with a mixed ending. A short book that will probably never leave you. The translation from the original French has been excellently done to retain the emotion. This is a good book that you would think a word could not be associated with such atrocities but it is.
