This story is especially meaningful to me because I grew up in the Philippines and used to fly over Saigon on my way to high school in Singapore in the late 1960s. The story is well written and makes Vietnamese history a great one. should be alive. It also provides an understanding of the issues and impacts of the Vietnam War on that country. There are many difficult passages, but the triumph of loyalty and love for family and longtime friends is heartwarming.
I’m half Vietnamese so this spoke to me. I grew up in the US with a Vietnamese influence from my mother, who doesn’t often talk about her life there or is likely to let go of more difficult memories.
This book helped me better understand her culture, my cultural history, and her upbringing in a war situation.
I was just listening to the book while driving so sometimes my mind wanders making it hard to follow as the voice shifts from niece to grandma. But that’s on me.
