As a lover of mysteries and a historian, I enjoy exploring books like the Gil Cunningham murder series. Nicholas Festival is the second book in the series that I’ve read (I’m reading the third now) and find it clever and entertaining. McIntosh has vividly recreated a very different world, one in which who your family is and who they’re loyal to is so important. She also gives us a hands-on look at the church and how important it was to people’s lives in Scotland in the late 15th century.

In this book, Gil Cunningham, formerly destined for the church but now engaged to Alys Mason, investigates the murder of a young and often unpopular student at Gil’s alma mater. Suspects range from schoolmates to a nobleman and relative of the murdered boy, as well as a priest. Gil, along with his fiancé and future father-in-law Pierre, arranges clues, motives, and complex family relationships to ultimately unmask the killer. In this book, we also get to meet Gil’s mother and get more details about family life during this period. Well, as another reviewer noted, there are quite a few unfamiliar words in the book. Some are included in the Kindle dictionary, some are not. For many of them, the author uses common terminology in the following one or two sentences, which helps us understand. Others can be figured out from the context. To me, the 15th century Scots language is fascinating and is added to, not diminished, by reading this book.
