In the late 1800s, three sisters use witchcraft to change the course of history in this powerful novel about magic, family, and the suffrage movement.
In 1893, there was no such thing as witchcraft. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witches are nothing but neat talismans and rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.
But when the Eastwood sisters – James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth and Beatrice Belladonna – joined suffrage advocates in New Salem, they began to pursue forgotten words and ways that could transform the movement, women into the witch movement. Stalked by darkness and disease, hunted by forces that don’t want witches to vote – and maybe even not live – two sisters will need to learn the oldest spells, create new alliance and mend their relationship if they want to survive.
There is no such thing as a witch. But there will be.
Celebrating the indomitable strength and tenacity of women, The Once and Future Witches reimagines stories of revolution, motherhood and women’s suffrage – the lost ways are calling.
Praise for the Once and Future Witch:
“A beautiful and thrilling song about the ferocious power of women. The characters live, bleed, and roar. I admire them and look forward to the witchcraft awakening in all of us. Harrow makes that becomes possible, and even possible.”
“A glorious escape into a world where witchcraft has shrunk to the memory of women’s magic, and three sly, wild sisters hold the key to bringing it back… . A story that will take you away.”
“This book is an incredible bit of magic and resistance so much-needed in our time, and a reminder that secret words and ways can never be lost once and for all. real and right way, as long as there is language to speak and ears to listen to.”
I love this story. It caught my attention and I did nothing but listen to it until it finished. I think I finished it in two days. I’m sorry it’s over. I love the sisters and the world Harrow built for them. It is emotional and detailed and steeped in magic and reality, joy and heartbreak, cruelty and kindness. It took me to another world, one of those possibilities that I very much wanted to become a reality.
My best friend Jamie has been begging me to read this book almost since I’ve known her. It took me a while to see this book in a “what to read after Babel” post to finally open it and SISTER, I’m going crazy waiting for so long. Bizarre romance, suffrage, Salem witch history, fantasy, nursery rhymes, and more, all come together in this novel and they all work well together. wonderful way. I see a little bit of myself in each of the three Eastwood sisters and my heart aches for their shared plight throughout the novel. Written as well as Babel, richer than most historical novels I’ve read, and a poignant lesson in many repetitive and damaging historical elements, I can’t find fault with The Once and Future Witches in a faint warm glow at the end of this book book tonight.
