The Perfect World Of Miwako Sumida – Audiobook Online By: Clarissa Goenawan
From the critically acclaimed author of Rainbirds, a novel of tragedy and dark history set in Japan.
University sophomore Miwako Sumida hanged herself, leaving those closest to her reeling. In the months leading up to her suicide, she had been hiding in a remote village on the mountainside, but what, or who, was she running from?
Ryusei, a classmate at Waseda who has unrequited feelings for Miwako, begs her best friend Chie to take him to the remote village where she spent her last days. While they’re away, his older sister, Fumi, who has taken Miwako as an apprentice in her studio, receives an unwelcome guest at her apartment in Tokyo, distracting her from her fear that Miwako’s death might ruin what’s left of her brother’s life.
Expanding into the beautifully crafted world of the Rainbirds, Clarissa Goenawan gradually pierces the carefully crafted exterior of a young woman, exposing her most painful secrets.
Miwako Sumida’s Perfect World is set in contemporary Tokyo and its suburbs. Miwako Sumida is a mysterious college sophomore at Waseda University who befriends fellow student Ryusei and his older sister, Fumi. They develop habits related to their art, but Miwako leaves the countryside and then commits suicide.Goenawan tells the stories from the perspective of her college friend Ryusei, her childhood friend and best friend Chie, and Rusei’s sister. As we got to know Miwako Sumida and her friends better, we were hooked. I really like the gentle tone of Goenawan’s writing. The slow rhythms and details of their lives bring Miwako and her friends to life.
What an excellent novel. This book is so easy to read, you’ll have a hard time putting it down. A dark, complicated story filled with engaging, well – developed characters, I glued my eyes to the page through twists and turns that took my breath away. An insight into loss and a fiery examination of secrets and uncertain futures, this novel is a triumph and an enthusiastic proposition.
