The Pillars Of Rome / Republic, Book 1, Audiobook Online By: Jack Ludlow
Two boys ask the famous Roman prophet to get a glimpse of their future, and Sybil draws a harbinger of death.
As they fled the cave in fear, Aulus and Lucius made an oath of allegiance to the death – an oath that will be tested in the years to come.
Thirty years pass and Aulus, now Rome’s most successful general, faces his toughest battle yet. The barbarian rebels have captured his wife and are demanding the Roman legion to withdraw from their lands. It was inconceivable that Aulus would agree, and he feared that she would be lost to Rome. Meanwhile, Lucius had achieved high rank in the Senate; a position that he abuses. But when Lucius is implicated in a murder, the foundation of the Republic is threatened. Lucius and Aulus soon find themselves on two different sides in the conflict, the old prophecy hanging over their heads…
Although the novel starts off slow, it is built with some interesting characters. It certainly has the hint of a larger trilogy in mind throughout the book. Ludlow is less formulaic than Mace and Turney. His characters are less cartoon-like than Scarrow, and although the characters are in development longer, they are still refreshing. I look forward to the second episode to see the growth and endless adventures of Aquila and Marcellus.
I’m only halfway through this book but I find it interesting and easy to read I often see in stories set years ago, you have a hard time keeping track of all the names that don’t resemble this. The interesting thing is that some political characters have not changed for many years, the only difference is that it is not easy to destroy the opposition to hope to remake the rest of the story.
