The Poisonwood Bible – Audiobook Online

“The Poisonwood Bible” is a powerful novel that follows the lives of the Price family as they move from Georgia to the Belgian Congo in the late 1950s. The father, Nathan Price, is a Baptist missionary determined to convert the Congolese people to Christianity, but his methods are harsh and unsympathetic to the local culture. The story is told through the alternating perspectives of the four Price daughters and their mother, who each have different reactions to their new home and their father’s preaching. As the political situation in the Congo deteriorates, the family is forced to confront the reality of their situation and the consequences of Nathan’s actions. The novel explores themes of cultural imperialism, colonialism, religion, and the power of language. “The Poisonwood Bible” is a moving and complex novel that tells the story of a family whose lives are forever changed by their experiences in the Congo.

The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, an ardent Baptist evangelist who brought his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They brought everything they believed they would need from home, but they quickly realized that all of it – from seeds in the garden to the Bible – had been catastrophically altered on African soil. The sequel is a suspenseful epic about a family’s remarkable and tragic reconstruction during three decades in post-colonial Africa.

The novel is set in one of the most dramatic political chronicles of the 20th century: Congo’s struggle for independence from Belgium, the murder of its first elected prime minister, a CIA coup to choose his replacement, and the insidious advancement of a world economic order that has stripped the fledgling African nation of autonomy. Taking its place alongside classics of postcolonial literature, this ambitious novel has established Kingsolver as one of the most profound and daring modern writers.

When I read Barbara Kingsolver’s “Pigs in Heaven,” I was transported to a world of ordinary life written in simple words that together convey the color and music of the language. Once again I was absorbed in the language and the story while engrossed in the reading of The Poisonwood Bible. Kingsolver’s word magic is combined with perfect tone, intonation and emotion in a genius narrative. Read (listen to) the Poisonwood Bible not only because the story is sure to capture the reader’s interest, but also because the experience of listening to carefully selected words transports you to the colors of mid-century Africa.

Barbara Kingsolver is a great writer, and this is her best book. She writes with such intelligence, knowledge and compassion, she clearly works hard on her research, and – especially in this book – brings her characters and an entire continent to life. I read this book many years ago and was VERY excited to have the opportunity to hear it. I miss the characters, but don’t remember much about the story, so I have to appreciate it again.
