These include a German spy named Franz von Ritter and his accomplice, Sabina Strauss, who are attempting to steal valuable military technology from Ardsley’s car. Detective Isaac Bell returns, in a remarkable new adventure from the New York Times bestselling author.

It’s 1910, the era of airplanes is still in its infancy, and newspaper publisher Preston Whiteway is offering $50,000 for the first daring pilot to cross America in less than 50 days. He even sponsored one of the leading contenders – a brave woman named Josephine Frost – and that’s when Bell, the chief investigator for the Van Dorn Office of Detectives, stepped in.

Frost’s hot-tempered, violent husband has just murdered her lover and intends to kill her, and he’s bound to make another attempt. Bell has had trouble with Harry Frost before; he knows that man has made millions of dollars leading gangs of thieves, murderers and thugs in every city across the country. He also knew that Frost would not only pursue his wife, but also Whiteway. And if Bell takes the case… Frost will go after him too.

Book 4 in Cussler and Scott’s Isaac Bell series continues with this great historical thriller. Set in 1910, this novel follows an airplane race across America for a prize of $50,000 ($50,000 in 1910 has a purchasing power of $1.2 million today). With such a huge prize pool, it’s no surprise that vandalism is as rampant as murder. Isaac Bell and his colleagues at the Van Dorn Detective Agency had more than they could handle to protect one of the contestants, a young woman. There is a lot of mystery and suspense.

Scott Brick great narration as usual.

The Issac Bell series is Cussler’s best work since Dirk Pitt’s early days. These stories are just great for my long walks. I’ve been looking forward to this for months and I was so excited when it came out. Planes, trains and cars! In my opinion, Cussler writes novels on land better than novels at sea. But that’s just me. As usual, Scott Brick was outstanding. He can read the phone book and keep me listening.

Scott Brick is who he is and awesome. If Scott had a puppy, I would raise one just to hear him bark. The story is based on the song “Come Josephine in My Flying Machine” and it’s an absolutely amazing story based on some of the lyrics. Great idea and well executed.

Issac himself and also an aviation enthusiast, it was interesting to watch Mr Bell learn about flying in the dawn of aviation before landing is called landing and is called getting off. Great book, read the others in the series in order or listen, because it’s not a need, but you will.
