The Rest Is Silence By James R. Benn – Audiobook Online

The Rest Is Silence is the ninth book in the Billy Boyle series written by James R. Benn. The series follows the adventures of Billy Boyle, a young detective and intelligence officer during World War II. In this installment, Billy finds himself embroiled in a complex and dangerous investigation while serving as a special investigator for General Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The story takes place in 1944, during the Allied invasion of Normandy. Billy Boyle is assigned to investigate the murder of an unidentified American soldier found dead on Omaha Beach. As he delves into the case, he discovers that the soldier was not killed by enemy fire but was instead murdered.

Billy’s investigation leads him to a group of German prisoners of war who were captured during the D-Day invasion. Among them is a high-ranking German officer named Colonel Rudolf von Klaus, who claims to have valuable information about an imminent assassination attempt on Winston Churchill. With time running out, Billy must determine if von Klaus’s claims are true or if he is simply trying to manipulate his captors.

As Billy digs deeper into the case, he uncovers a web of deception and betrayal that reaches high up in the ranks of both the Allied and Axis forces. He must navigate through a maze of conflicting loyalties and hidden agendas to uncover the truth and prevent a catastrophic event that could change the course of the war.

Throughout his investigation, Billy faces numerous challenges and dangers. He encounters resistance from both his superiors and his fellow soldiers, who are skeptical of his abilities as a detective. He also faces personal demons from his past and struggles with his own sense of duty and morality.

As the story unfolds, Billy’s determination and resourcefulness are put to the test. He must rely on his instincts and intelligence to outwit his enemies and bring justice to those responsible for the murder on Omaha Beach.

When an unidentified corpse washes up on the south coast of Britain’s Slapton Sandson, US Army captain Billy Boyle and his partner, Lieutenant Piotr “Kaz” Kazimierz, are tasked with investigating. Devonshire Beach is the site of Operation Tiger, the top secret maneuver for the approaching D-Day invasion of Normandy, and the area is restricted; no one seems to know where the corpse might come from. Luckily, Billy and Kaz have a comfortable place to rest their heads at the end of the day: Kaz’s former classmate David lives nearby and has agreed to host the two men during their investigation. Glad to be free of his duties, Billy settles into the family manor, Ashcroft, and makes it his mission to get to know its intriguing cast of characters.

Just as Billy and Kaz begin to close their case, they find themselves with not just one soggy corpse but hundreds of corpses after a terrible tragedy during a D-day rehearsal. To complicate things further, life at Ashcroft has become tense: secret agendas, buried history, and family feuds abound. Then one of the men met a sudden death. Was it a heart attack – or something more sinister?

I’ve heard all the mysteries of Billie Boyle. If you are a fan, this part will not disappoint listeners. The characters are well developed and you really don’t understand anything until the end. Billie gets help from another detective, which is interesting. Pretty well done and narrated.

I’ve been following the Billy Boyle Mystery series since the very beginning. I found the idea of a mystery series set in the chaos of World War II curious. The first book, “Billy Boyle” introduced the main character, but I felt it was just average as a character sketch, a mystery, and a historical novel.
The author made rapid progress on all fronts after that. I see each book as an improvement over the previous one. With “Death’s Door” (2012), I feel confident enough to recommend the author to my wife, who is more of a fan of detective or historical fiction than anything specifically related to war. I see the context of the Vatican as equivalent to the traditional “closed room” mystery written in large

Love it all, great reader…with one exception…all of his British accent sounds like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. Another set in the series Billy Boyle and the Brothers in His Arms. This film stars Agatha Christie amid the historical tragedies leading up to the Normandy Invasion.

Every Billy Boyle story just keeps getting better. I find it hard to get out when interrupted. For one, I really like a story that draws one into it. I really like how the story is organized to put together and if you know Slapton and the three locations around it that makes it come alive.
