The Rise of Endymion By Dan Simmons – Audiobook Online

The Rise of Endymion is the fourth and final book in the Hyperion Cantos series written by Dan Simmons. It was published in 1997 and continues the epic science fiction saga that began with Hyperion. The book follows the story of Raul Endymion, a former soldier, as he becomes intertwined with the fate of the universe.

The story takes place several centuries after the events of the previous books. Humanity has spread across multiple planets and is ruled by the Pax, a religious organization that worships the TechnoCore, a group of powerful artificial intelligences. The Pax maintains control through a combination of military force and religious indoctrination.

Raul Endymion, a native of the planet Hyperion, finds himself on a mission to protect Aenea, a young girl who possesses mysterious powers and is seen as a threat to the Pax. Aenea is revealed to be the daughter of Brawne Lamia and John Keats, two characters from the earlier books.

As Raul travels with Aenea, they encounter various challenges and dangers. They are pursued by agents of the Pax, including Cardinal Lourdusamy, who seeks to capture Aenea and use her powers for his own gain. Along their journey, they also encounter other characters from previous books, such as Martin Silenus and Sol Weintraub.

Throughout their journey, Aenea reveals her true purpose: to bring about a new era for humanity free from the control of the TechnoCore and the Pax. She possesses a unique ability called “farcasting,” which allows her to travel instantly between different worlds. This power threatens the stability of the Pax’s rule and attracts the attention of both allies and enemies.

As Raul and Aenea continue their quest, they face numerous challenges and revelations. They learn about the true nature of the TechnoCore and its plans for humanity. They also discover the existence of the Void Which Binds, a mysterious force that connects all living beings in the universe.

The story culminates in a final confrontation between Aenea and the Pax. Aenea sacrifices herself to save humanity and defeat the TechnoCore. However, her actions have far-reaching consequences that reshape the universe.

The Rise of Endymion explores themes of religion, technology, love, and sacrifice. It delves into complex philosophical questions about the nature of consciousness, free will, and the meaning of life. The book combines elements of science fiction, fantasy, and mythology to create a rich and immersive narrative.

Overall, The Rise of Endymion is a thought-provoking conclusion to the Hyperion Cantos series. It ties together the various storylines and characters from the previous books while introducing new concepts and ideas. Dan Simmons’ writing style is engaging and descriptive, drawing readers into a vividly imagined future.

In this great sequel to the epic adventure that began in Hyperion, Simmons takes us back to a distant future resplendent with drama and invention. In the world of Hyperion, mysterious Time Tombs are opening. And the secrets they contain mean that nothing – nothing anywhere in the universe – will ever be the same.

This is the climactic finale of Dan Simmons’ brilliant Hyperion Cantos. There are solutions, big revelations, and lots of shocking twists and turns, but Simmons still leaves some things in the dark, only partially explained. But this is a good thing, as it elevates the mystery of his universe and prompts the reader to imagine what will happen next after the final paragraph.

This is sci-fi at its best: the fantasy of a perfectly rational future universe, where humans grapple with age-old conundrums and ever-evolving moral responsibilities, overshadowed by man’s nagging anxiety about his machines. While Cantos is certainly an polemic against organized religion and especially Roman Catholicism, Simmons exhibits surprising tenderness towards the church in the series’ resolution and allows the reader to draw their own conclusions about whether the church can save its own soul.

If you’re a fan of science fiction, then this series has it all: time travel, space battles, realistic physics and the limitations of space travel, artificial intelligence, and yes, a deep romance. This is a vast range of ideas and mind-bending ranges. Do not miss.

The epic finale of Hyperion Cantos! Well-written, painful, and wraps well. I was sad to see the series end, but…. That’s life, isn’t it? I’ll give it a year or two and then listen to the whole cantos again.

Books about time always seem to have a paradox to them. This book avoids this problem nicely. This is the end of a four-book series and you should start with Hyperion. Rise of Endymion is the glorious climax of this series. I wouldn’t miss this sci-fi tour for nothing. It’s one of those audiobooks that you think you might listen to again, too.

I just wish this series could be longer than 4 books. Good story. This series makes you think about our place in the universe…interesting in life, god, emotions, AI and life can be advanced, and…how important humanity is…
