The River of No Return By Bee Ridgway – Audiobook Online

The River of No Return is a novel written by Bee Ridgway. It is a blend of historical fiction, romance, and science fiction, published in 2013. The story revolves around time travel and explores themes of love, loyalty, and the consequences of altering the past.

The protagonist of the story is Lord Nicholas Falcott, an Englishman who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. After being fatally wounded on the battlefield, Nicholas mysteriously finds himself transported from 1815 to the present day. Confused and disoriented, he is taken in by a secret society known as the Guild, which has the ability to manipulate time.

The Guild explains to Nicholas that he possesses a rare genetic trait that allows him to “jump” through time. They offer him a choice: either join their ranks and learn to control his newfound abilities or be left to navigate the modern world alone. Nicholas reluctantly agrees to become part of the Guild and undergoes rigorous training to understand and harness his powers.

Years later, Nicholas is assigned a mission by the Guild. He is sent back in time to 1815, where he must prevent a fellow time traveler from altering history. This mission leads him to Julia Percy, a young woman who possesses her own unique connection to time. As Nicholas and Julia grow closer, they discover a deep bond that transcends time itself.

However, their love is tested when they uncover a conspiracy within the Guild. They realize that not everyone within the organization has good intentions, and some members are willing to sacrifice everything for power. Nicholas and Julia find themselves caught in a web of deceit and danger as they try to navigate both the past and present.

“The River of No Return” takes readers on an immersive journey through different time periods, blending historical events with fictional elements. Bee Ridgway skillfully weaves together intricate plotlines and vivid descriptions, creating a captivating narrative that keeps readers engaged from start to finish. The novel explores the complexities of time travel, delving into the moral and ethical implications of altering history.

Bee Ridgway’s wildly innovative debut novel, The River of No Return, blends romance, intrigue, and time travel to craft a story that is sure to captivate listeners. When soldier and aristocrat Nick Falcott was sent from the Napoleonic battlefields in 1815 to present-day London, he never expected to return – until the Society called for him. Returning home as if from the dead, Nick reunites with his lost love, Julia Percy, and asks her to help find a mysterious object known as the Amulet.

Bee Ridgway delivers a gripping first novel of love and ideas in _The River of No Return._ The plot twists and leaps between continents and centuries require unusual attention. I think this is partly because the book contains a lot of unique ideas interwoven within the framework of a romance novel and time travel. It’s basically a novel of ideas, though if you don’t like the idea, you can still enjoy the fast-paced, ingenious plot and compelling love story.

A writer’s prose can be commended for many qualities: wit, sensory appeal, scope of reference, playful creativity, passion, and grace. The well drawn characters are great company and I miss them. (I’m looking forward to the sequel, as you can tell.) For me, however, the most admirable thing about this book is that it achieves something very few writers have done: it’s a story with a soul.

What I mean is that while this book deserves to be widely circulated because it is so interesting, it also lays a high moral ground. While never becoming a stage for preaching or posing, this vantage point in action counteracts the reassertion of the status of “winners” in history’s many struggles. Instead, the story constantly invites scrutiny to the questions of who shoots who and which side should win, in almost all of the historical pulse points identified in the plot. There is a longstanding commitment to human uniqueness and human values throughout. Ultimately, this moral warmth is expressed, so that a character’s identity by perceived cultural standards no longer makes sense in those terms.

The story raises questions about who benefits from certain accounts of how things happened and who suffers injustice when those accounts are confused with the truth. If the winners write history, this is a winning inquiry into all such power bids. Such qualities are rare and much needed in our world. However, where Julia and Nick (as in a period?) is not revealed: that’s another reason why I look forward to reading more about their adventures.

Looks like I’ve built up a small library of time travel books that came out in 2013. Maybe 2014 will be the year I read them. At least I started this process with Bee Ridgway’s The River Doesn’t Return, a book that I enjoyed reading that was reminiscent in some way of my years reading Georgette Heyer romances during the Regent.

A great book filled with lively characters and locations. This is the first novel I read on my brand new Kindle. Anyone who loves England Georgia and time travel this is the book for you.
