The Road of Danger By David Drake – Audiobook Online
The Road of Danger is the ninth book in the RCN Series written by David Drake. This science fiction novel was published in 2012 and continues the thrilling adventures of Captain Daniel Leary and his loyal crew.
Set in a distant future, the RCN (Republic of Cinnabar Navy) series follows the exploits of Captain Leary, a skilled and resourceful officer, and his friend and comrade, Adele Mundy. The series is known for its blend of space opera, military science fiction, and political intrigue.
In The Road of Danger, Captain Leary and his crew find themselves embroiled in a dangerous mission. The story begins with Leary being assigned to escort an important Cinnabar dignitary to a peace conference on a distant planet. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse when they are ambushed by unknown assailants.
As the crew fights to survive, they discover that their attackers are part of a conspiracy aimed at destabilizing the fragile peace between Cinnabar and its rival, the Alliance. With their ship damaged and their options limited, Leary and his crew must navigate treacherous political waters while trying to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy.
Throughout the novel, Drake masterfully weaves together elements of action, suspense, and political maneuvering. The characters face numerous challenges as they struggle to stay alive and protect their mission. Leary’s leadership skills are put to the test as he must make difficult decisions that could have far-reaching consequences.
One of the strengths of The Road of Danger is Drake’s ability to create complex and believable characters. Captain Leary is a charismatic leader who inspires loyalty from his crew. Adele Mundy, with her intelligence and expertise in information warfare, provides a perfect foil to Leary’s more impulsive nature. The interactions between these two central characters add depth and richness to the story.
Drake’s world-building is also commendable. He creates a vivid and detailed universe, complete with different political factions, interstellar travel, and advanced technology. The descriptions of space battles and military tactics are well-researched and add a sense of realism to the story.
Furthermore, The Road of Danger explores themes of loyalty, honor, and the consequences of war. Drake delves into the moral complexities faced by soldiers and the sacrifices they make for their cause. The novel raises thought-provoking questions about the nature of conflict and the price of peace.
In conclusion, The Road of Danger is a thrilling addition to the RCN Series by David Drake. With its engaging characters, intricate plot, and well-crafted world-building, this book will captivate fans of science fiction and military fiction alike.

The Road of Danger
- RCN Series, Book 9
- Narrated by: Victor Bevine
Captain Daniel Leary and his friend – and spy – Officer Adele Mundy are sent to a quiet area for an easy task: to help the local admiral quell a coup before it takes place. But then the jealous admiral gets rid of them by sending them on an extravagant chase to an area where trade is king and business is done by extortion and gunfights. Amid anarchy and rebellion, a rogue intelligence officer plots a war that will destroy civilization and enlists the help of a brute that even torturers can’t stand. And, of course, stopping that madness is up to Leary and Mundy.
Just the latest in the adventures of Daniel Leary and Adele Mundy. He’s always cheerful and upbeat, and she’s…well…a good friend to Daniel. Today she would be called a high functioning autistic. I am always amazed at how they can turn a situation that seems impossible. If you like military science fiction with a fun, fast-paced story, you’ll love this series!
First let me say this is another very interesting book in the RCN series but if you are looking to see the series then you better pick up a previous one.
If you’ve enjoyed the series so far, you’ll love this book as well. Nothing new added here, which can usually lead me to downgrade the story but I just find it too interesting.
As is the case with most of the series, Leary is sent to another world with a simple quest, which then leads to a more complex and complex quest, and so on. For me, I read this book at the right time so I really enjoyed it but the plot needs to start moving. Although we understand a little more about the politics of the universe, it is too much alike.
Victor Bevine has always done a great job. At this point, I can’t imagine these books will be read by anyone else. So while I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who has loved the series so far, it’s actually more of the same.
Drake weaves interesting stories that combine action and intrigue. He is a truly remarkable author and can transport you to another world. While his stories may have a moral lesson, he doesn’t hit you in the head and hit you with it. He tells you a wonderful story and when you think about it, you realize that he also shares a profound moral lesson…it’s wonderful and wonderful. Thank you for your wonderful creation from a bleak world to yours, Mr. Drake. I’ve always liked it.
