A timeless source of wisdom for those who want to lead a simple, purposeful and serene life.

The Rule of Saint Benedict has governed monastic communities for centuries, but it is not just a standard religious text. Above all, this Code is a guide to living an intentional life – regardless of your religious background or beliefs. It teaches the importance of contemplation and silence, of solitude, and the power of community and unity.

With lessons that focus on simple acts of everyday life, like eating and drinking and daily chores, along with wisdom for the deeply personal and inner aspects of life, such as cultivating humility and practicing forgiveness, Saint Benedict’s Rule is a profound guide to living a good and meaningful life.

As an award-winning translator, Philip Freeman’s version of the Rules is beautifully accessible in its language. With a simple and direct style, the book presents a transformative way of life in its striking simplicity and power.

When I was a teenager, I joked that I wanted to be a monk – a bit too much for a non-Catholic woman. I was delighted to learn that Saint Benedict’s holy day coincided with my birthday, so I eagerly read his guide to the contemplative life.

It is important to note that this is a new translation and interpretation of his Code. I was expecting more biographical information and if I had read the description more carefully I would have realized it. Still, it’s a beautiful, easy-to-read translation of his Rule, which provides some guidance that applies to everyday life in the twenty-first century. As we enter what is traditionally a very busy time in everyone’s life (perhaps not as much this year as others), it’s valuable to take a step back and consider the life of religious communities over a thousand years ago and consider how some of that might be translated and done today.
