While in France, the immortal magician Magnus Bane finds himself trying to rescue the royal family from the horrors of the French Revolution – after being swept up in this mess by a most fascinating earl. Naturally, the daring escape requires invisible balloons.…

This electronic-only stand-alone short story sheds light on the life of enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose charming personality featured prominently on the pages of the New York Times bestselling series The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices.

I like this better than the previous short. The prose is smoother, the plot is tighter, and I feel the mood of tragedy and comedy suits Magnus better. The story about Peru I find a bit rambling and too cute and only captures my interest in the page or two where he thinks of his mother. In the Peru story, Magnus himself seems a bit goofy and campy and rather lacks the comedic intelligence that I find so charming in the hell gear series and the mortal tool series. In The Runaway Queen, Magnus himself seems more personable than in previous outings, though once again I balk at being too reliant on camp to describe his thoughts and personality. However, it dwindled over time and I found myself enjoying the story more and more as I read it. My only problem with the ending is that it makes me wonder who Sophie is? This isn’t Sophie from ID is it? I would have preferred the omitted name because it distracts me from the ending.
