Simon Templar comes to New York – to sip cocktails, listen to jazz and have a good time. But he has a way of making enemies, and a quiet night in Cookie’s Cellar puts him on a path involving drugs, smuggling, corpses, a beautiful singer named Avalon Dexter, and finally same disgusting Cookie itself. The battle is going on.

Leslie Charteris was born in Singapore and moved to England in 1919. He left Cambridge University early when his first novel was accepted for publication. He wrote novels about the Saint during his lifetime, becoming one of the most prolific and popular authors of the twentieth century.

“Simon Templar lit another cigarette, took a sip of his latest and most anemic-looking sorghum, and thought with considerable gloom that if defeating the villains required any man If a man like him has to endure certain discomforts and annoyances, there must be more attractions and entertainment places to endure them than a business with a name like Cookie’s Cellar, located on a single floor. rejuvenated cellar in the East Fifties of New York City, USA.

For instance, any reasonably busy boiler plant in any relatively unhealthy transition zone.”

“For those rather interesting characteristics piracy has probably drifted in and out of more great forms of trouble than any other explorer of this century. Newspaper copies have looked. from under titles that would have formerly been seen as a pulp writer’s fantasy. The man they glorified as the Robin Hood of modern crime has come to make them a reality.”

The Saint is in New York, and isn’t impressed at all with the booze scene in the nightclub scene. He’s on the trail of a drug operation, and the suspects are likely a fat pianist, a psychiatrist, a poet, and a young artist.

He also has to decide if the beautiful singer Avalon Dexter, who is pretty, pretty good to him, is on that level.

Leslie Charteris did it again; he came out on top with another great adventure in which Simon Templar shines with his “halo”. The story is fascinating. It grabs you right to the end. And Mr. Charteris has an extraordinary level of English. I don’t need TV or film to visualize each scene as it unfolds.
