So sit back, relax, and let Vance and Farr guide you through the twists and turns of this unforgettable novel.

Charles Arrowby, the leading light of the British stage, leaves flashy London for a secluded house by the sea. He plans to write a memoir about his wonderful love affair with Clement Makin, his mentor, both professionally and personally, and entertain himself with Lizzie, an actress with whom he made attached for many years. None of his plans work, and his memoir grows into a fascinating chronicle of strange events and unexpected guests — some real, some real. is a ghost — disrupting his world and shaking his oversized ego. its core.

This languidly beautiful first person narrative is utterly captivating. The story is poignant and filled with reflections and thoughts on everyday life, both looking forward and looking back into retirement. Murdoch’s writing skills make simple everyday difficulties interesting and even engaging. The characters are well developed and recognizable.

I love the way Murdoch uses the recurring theme of the ocean, which forms a solid framework or backbone for the book. The detailed depiction of the sea, its colors, lights and changing movements never becomes boring or overwhelming. Instead, it lays the groundwork for the story, filling it with beauty, danger, monsters, and destruction.

The narration is excellent. I wasn’t sure about Vance at first but I quickly fell in love with his reading style. The only negative I have about this edition of the book is that I really didn’t like the introduction. So if it frustrates you I suggest you just ignore it. That part is a bit heavy. Don’t let it take you away from a great book.
