The Shelf By: Helly Acton – Audiobook Online

“The Shelf” by Helly Acton is a novel that revolves around the story of a woman named Amy who is left embarrassed and heartbroken after being publicly dumped on a reality TV show. As a way to cope with the rejection, she agrees to participate in a competition called “The Shelf,” in which she and several other women live in a house together and compete to receive a marriage proposal from a wealthy bachelor. Throughout the competition, Amy forms bonds with some of the other women and begins to question the importance of finding love and validation from someone else. She learns to appreciate herself and her independence, leading to unexpected revelations and growth. The audiobook version is narrated by Daisy Edgar-Jones.

A humorous, feminist, and incredibly relatable novel about our obsession with mating, settling into lives, and the battle we all face with self-acceptance, The Shelf introduces the freshest voices in women’s fiction.

Narrated by Daisy Edgar-Jones (Ordinary Man, Gentleman Jack, Cold Feet, World War)

Ever feel like you’re losing a race you never signed up for?

Everyone in Amy’s life seems to be getting married, having kids, and settling down (or so Instagram tells her), and she feels like she’s falling behind.

So when her longtime boyfriend surprises her with a dream vacation, she thinks he’ll finally answer the big question. But the dream turned into a nightmare when she instead found herself on the set of the Big Brother-style reality TV show, The Shelf.

Along with five other women, Amy is brutally dumped live on TV and must compete in a series of humiliating and obnoxious missions in hopes of being crowned ‘The Keeper’.

This book is so much more… it’s fun, thought-provoking, feminist, and funny. Some lines in this book make me wish I could read with someone because I mean “haha you don’t love when she says…”

The characters are diverse and unique in their own way. This means that when they’re all put on reality TV and living together in a Big Brother-style house, there’s a lot of dynamics that the author explores so well.

There are great moments when women stand up for themselves against the challenges of sexism and when they realize that being outcasts can be a blessing in disguise! I have to admit I laughed a lot at how Jackie dealt with taking care of a fake baby!

As someone who has also felt pressure from society to do certain things at certain times in life and to have children before “time runs out”, there are parts of this book that really make a difference with me and make me feel much more comfortable living my life my way.

It was easy to read so I skimmed it in 2 days. That said, it’s not empty in any way… just well-written with a fluid and enjoyable style.
