“Sara Seager’s exploration of outer and inner space makes for a beautifully original memoir.” (Abraham Verghese, author of Cut the Rock)

Sara Seager has always loved the stars: so many lights in the sky, so many possibilities. Now a pioneering planetary scientist, she searches for exoplanets – especially distant, elusive worlds to sustain life. But with the sudden death of her husband Seager, her own life purpose becomes difficult for her. Suddenly, at the age of 40, she is a widow and single mother of two young boys. For the first time, she felt alone in the universe.

As she struggles to navigate her life after her loss, Seager finds solace in the alien beauty of exoplanets and the technical challenges of exploration. At the same time, she discovers earthly connections that feel little by little, as strangers and loved ones all reach out to her through her grief-stricken space. Among them are Widow Concord, a group of women who give advice on everything from home maintenance to dating, and her two beloved sons, Max and Alex. The most surprising thing is that there is another kind of one-of-a-kind match, not in the stars but here at home.

Powerfully exploratory and honest, The Smallest Light in the Universe is its own kind of light in the dark.

The smallest lights in the universe is an eloquent, poetic and beautiful story. Sara Seager writes with grace and style about her loves, her losses, and her joys. She also illustrates what it’s like to be a woman in the STEM field and gives a powerful voice to all of us.

I was very sad when I finished this book. I personally relate to Sara’s journey and this comforts me. The smallest lamps in the universe were constant companions during my first two chemical infusions. I will miss seeing Sara Seager’s lovely world. I am so glad I had the opportunity to read this book. It helps me not to feel so lonely.
