The Space Between Worlds – Audiobook Online

The Space Between Worlds is a science fiction novel written by Micaiah Johnson and narrated by Nicole Lewis. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a technology has been invented that allows individuals to travel to parallel universes. The protagonist, Cara, is a multiverse traveler who navigates between worlds for her job. She comes from the lower class of a dystopian society and has suffered tremendous loss throughout her life. As she travels to different universes, she discovers that there are versions of herself in each, but her life has taken drastic turns in some. When she learns that someone is killing all the versions of herself in every world, she becomes determined to find out who is behind the murders and stop them. The book explores themes of identity, class, grief, and what it means to truly belong. The narration by Nicole Lewis is fantastic, bringing depth and emotion to each character. She captures the nuanced differences in the various versions of Cara, adding to the complex and thought-provoking nature of the story. Overall, The Space Between Worlds is a gripping and immersive tale that will keep listeners engaged until the end.

Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s only one catch: No one can visit a world where their partner is still alive. Join Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be very good at dying — either from illness, a war on the pitch, or a vendetta they just can’t get over. Cara’s life was cut short across 372 worlds.

However, on this Dark Earth, Cara survived. Identified as a pagan and thus a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is dragged out of the dusty wasteland. Now, what had once made her socially marginalized had finally become an unexpected source of strength. She has a nice apartment downstairs in rich and walled Wiley City. She works — and brazenly flirts — with her attractive but aloof manager, Dell, as the two women collect out-of-this-world data for the Eldridge Institute. She even occasionally leaves the city to visit family in ruins, though she struggles to feel at home in both places. As long as she can keep her head down and avoid trouble, Cara is well on her way to citizenship and security.

But trouble finds Cara when one of her eight remaining doppelgängers dies under mysterious circumstances, thrusting her into a new world with an old secret. What she discovers will connect her past and her future in ways she could never have imagined — and reveal her own role in a dangerous plot. only for her world but also for the entire multiverse.

“Intelligent characters, unexpected twists, plenty of action, and a plot that highlight social and racial inequality with edgy prose.”—Library Journal (starred review)

Lately “sci-fi” has become something that can only really be classified as action. A really interesting premise is laid out in the synopsis, but the subject matter is at most a couple of chapters, then just a few shallow characters being chased from place to place. This is different, and I’m really grateful.

This is a great story with excellent world building and a unique premise. Readers are special. An instant favorite!
