The State of Us
- Narrated by: Dan Bittner, Vikas Adam
When Dean Arnault’s mother decided to run for president, no one was surprised, especially her son. However, that doesn’t mean Dean wants to be part of the public spectacle that is the race for the White House – at least until he meets Dre.
The only problem is that Dre Rosario is on the opposite side; he is the son of the Democratic candidate. But as Dean and Dre’s encounters during the campaign become less random, their friendship quickly turns into a romance unlike anything the two boys have ever known.
If falling in love across the street isn’t hard enough, the political intrigue of a shady third-party candidate could cause Dean and Dre’s worlds to explode around them. It’s a new, modern, star-crossed romance about what it really means to love your country – and yourself – from the acclaimed author of We Are the Ants and Brave Face, Shaun David Hutchinson.
Mel is a bad friend for 95% of the book, and the parents are a bit unfriendly and a bit slow to start, but I like how Dre isn’t completely involved in politics, and I like Dean’s way too. I think it’s a good teen novel, but it’s a bit young when it’s set in a senior year.
This story really lifted my spirits. I know it’s going to be compared as hell to Red White and Royal Blue but I think this movie has a better balance between romance and politics and overall it’s really sweet and cheesy in a good way. best.
It’s a really good book. The premise is unlikely but I’ve supported the two main characters along the way.
