Doesn’t every marriage have a dark side?
To the outside world, Hannah is married to the perfect man. Behind the closed doors of their majestic home, it’s a very different story.
Nathan controls everything Hannah does. He chooses her clothes, checks her receipts and locks her passport. But why did she let him?
Years ago, in the midst of a raging storm, tragic events one night changed everything. And Hannah has had to live with the consequences ever since. Keep Nathan happy. Do as she says.
But the past is about to catch up with them.
Set in the unforgiving of a Cornish fishing port in the ’90s, it’s a devastating exploration of the power of coercive control in a marriage where nothing seems to be complete…
I love Amanda Jenning’s novels. She portrays humans with all their twisted psychological complexities and doesn’t hesitate to show warts and all. Her love for Cornwall shines through, brought to life by both narrators’ brilliant interpretations of the story. I lived in a fishing community in Cornish for a while and Amanda nailed the small environment, how people know other people’s businesses, and how life revolves around the sea and pubs. I immerse myself in this book, which shows the labor side of Cornwall – the harsh fishing industry, the rude banter of young, upbeat fishermen, shop and pub owners – rather than the ideal pink – tinted version many people have in the county. Well done, Amanda, another success.
I love this book. it’s a lot better than I thought it would be, probably because there are so many mediocre horror movies I’ve read at this point! Unlike so many books in this genre, the characters in this book have depth; The main character is cute and interesting. The story is well paced and really well written with enough detail to keep it interesting but not too wordy. I will now read other books by this author because I enjoyed it so much. Must read.
