The Sweeney Sisters
- A Novel
- Narrated by: Brittany Pressley
Maggie, Eliza and Tricia Sweeney grew up as a happy couple in the idyllic seaside town of Southport, Connecticut. But their mother’s death from cancer 15 years ago tarnished their golden memories, and the sisters grew apart. One of their standards is their father, Bill Sweeney, an internationally renowned university professor and literary lion beloved by critics, publishers, and book lovers. When Bill dies suddenly on a cool June night, his shell-shocked daughters return to their childhood home. They aren’t sure what the future holds without their great father, but they know how to awaken the Irish to honor a man of his caliber.
But as the guests pay their respects and reminisce, a stranger, encouraged by whiskey, ruins the party. Turns out she’s also Sweeney’s sister. When Washington, DC-based journalist Serena Tucker took her DNA test a few weeks earlier, she learned that she had a 50% genetic match with a childhood neighbor – Maggie Sweeney of Southport, Connecticut . Looks like Serena’s cold WASP mom, Birdie, had a history with Bill Sweeney – something that’s remained a total secret to this day.
I really enjoyed this book with its twists and turns on the ups and downs of family relationships, including dealing with secrets and lies.
I could easily consider this a Netflix series and hope something is being worked on. I pictured it in my head when I heard it on my morning walk.
I’m so jealous of the Sweeney sisters, each with a place in their tight-knit group, their flaws and all. They know each other’s limitations! The book really gives you a glimpse into their lives as the daughters of a famous scholar, whose selfishness eventually led them into his path. However, they love and respect him even though they have a strict view of his life and work. He has a secret that he has kept from his family and the girls have to clean it up. There are a lot of hard truths that you will glean from the characters’ dialogue, relationships, and actions. I find myself stopping to jot down the facts I want to uncover about my origin story. I learned a lot about literature, landmarks, Yale, and government. The book offers a lot of strong, intelligent and innovative female characters. No bashing men or.. strong men. I guess the author shows how life can evolve when we accept human frailty and decide to be the captain of our waters (you’ll get that reference when read it)! Above all, during this time of quarantine, we need messages that remind us to reassess our path and re-emerge better!!!!! A spoiler chapter 18!!! Okay, two spoilers, some amazing things said, I pumped my fists many times, faced with the paced and interesting story, I heard this in a day.
I love it! The characters are very real. I definitely hope that there will be a sequel!! One small thing: Brittany Pressley should know that the author’s name is pronounced ‘Lee-un’, not Lee Ann. Good acting!!
