It’s the start of a new term at Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witchcraft and Mildred Hubble is determined not to be the worst witch this year. Everything started very well. Mildred’s class has a new homeroom teacher – no more Miss Hardbroom for Mildred and her friends! But then the new teacher, Miss Granite, starts acting suspiciously; Mildred has a bad hair day when her hair-growing spell goes wrong and she has to accept that the know-it-all Ethel Hallow is ‘useful’. On top of that, her beloved cat Tabby is having a nervous breakdown and refuses to fly.

Jill Murphy wrote the first Worst Witch story, according to Wikipedia, when she was 15 years old and still in boarding school. Perhaps that’s what makes Mildred Hubble so realistic and emotionally recognizable. Although we don’t seem to meet too many witches these days, we all know Mildred – if we aren’t Mildred ourselves. Trying to be invisible while coming up with unrealistic plans to achieve miraculous success but completely failing at both.

In “Save the Day” – Book 5, Mildred returns to school for her third year. She has an idea to solve her hair troubles – which predictably doesn’t end well. And even though she’s learned to fly, she still has trouble with her shy cat and the taunts from school social perfectionist Ethel Hallow (I’m sure we’ve all met her before). that) doesn’t help either. There’s also a rather odd new instructor, Ms. Granite, who doesn’t seem to care how the students spend their time – and Ms. Hardbroom won’t put up with that for long. But the interesting thing is that Mildred is the one who is most suspicious of Miss Granite.
