This beautifully written book with unforgettable characters will be hard to forget. Janie is a beautiful black woman; was raised by her grandmother, who forced her to marry an old man. She runs away with a man who pretends to love her but looks down on her and forces her to work in his shop, while refusing anything she wants. When he died, she got rich and met a man much younger than him, Teacake. The love they have for each other is rare, and they find life together in the Everglades. Hurston’s language and the characters’ authentic country voices will draw you into their world. The resolution makes it hard for a person to breathe. I think this is a masterpiece that will last.

In this story we meet Janie, the main character. The author brings a lively Southern talk style to the character. It made me feel like I was right in the story, talking to them.

We are transported back in time to when Janie was a child and I feel honored to hear about her Nanny (Grandma), tell a bit of history about her life and Janie’s mother. It shows the dark side of life many years ago with the author describing how varied everything was back then.

In fact, the author covers many topics in this story. Diversity, racism, domestic abuse as well as spirituality are just a few. It makes for a rather bleak read but Janie is a bigger character in real life and has much to absorb in her life over time as well as her relationships with three other men. together. Each one brings something different with it to the reader.
