Written in Red A Novel of the Others – Online Free Audiobook

Written in Red is the first book in The Others series by author Anne Bishop.
New York Times bestseller Anne Bishop. The content of the novel is about a world inhabited by Others, extraordinary entities – vampires and shapeshifters among them – rulers of the Earth and their prey is humans.

As a blood oracle, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut – a gift more like a curse. Meg enslaves her so that he has full access to her image. But when she escaped, the only safe place Meg could hide was in the Lakeside Courtyard – a business district run by the Other.

Shapeshifter Simon Wolfgard reluctantly hires strangers to inquire about the Human Contact job. He feels she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. A stronger instinct prompted him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she is wanted by the government, he will have to decide if she is worthy of the war between humans and the Others that will inevitably follow or not?

Meg Corbyn, stumbles off of the page and into your heart pretty quickly. She escapes the compound where she is imprisoned ends up near freezing to death in a city half a continent away, looking for safety. She’s likeable, funny all things considered, but born with a dangerous innocence that flavours her blood. Simon Wolfgard, the terra indigene (The Others) who can assume both wolf and human form, reluctantly gives her a job in his bookstore. Meg gets under Simon’s skin like a burr, but she intrigues all the terra indigene. Simon has established a small business community to help the terra indigene interact and observe the prey – humans. However, Meg is a catlyst for change; mistakes happen, strange alliances are formed and the entire continent feels the reverberations of Simon’s actions.

Anne Bishop creates an amazing world with continents named similar to ours – but that’s where the similarities end. The Others are the dominant species in the world, ancient and intelligent and consider humans as, for the most part, ‘clever meat’. It’s a dangerous world and more so when humans become complacent and forget how the The Others really see humanity. And how much power they have over the world. There are touches of horror and gore to this story – both with the actions of The Others though worse are those of some humans – through their greed reduce human girls like Meg, to being little more a possession without even the most basic of rights.

Written in Red and the rest of the series is a mirror held up to human society and it is disturbing. The story flows quickly and establishes the main characters early on – it has a nice ensemble cast who are each fascinating and have their own stories to tell. It’s a world I want to live in – I particularly like the Lakeside Courtyard – because of the honesty of the terra indigene and their sense of fairplay – until they are taught differently.
