Fascinating overview of overlooked history
The history of Africans and their descendants meeting and adapting to Europeans colonizing from the north and migrating/being taken to distant lands that eventually became their homeland over the many centuries have largely focused on biographies of people of specific dual heritage interacting with various white European societies and governments. Sometimes, as the author points out, the first piece of information is very little or completely missing – highlighting the challenges of getting a thorough history of a topic that some say does not exist.

It’s not unusual to hear an audiobook read by an author unless the author is also a performer. That sometimes proves to be awkward in this case. Professor Otele has an interesting accent as the French roots are clear and many words are quite similar to English, but sometimes the pronunciation is a bit odd and the spelling is annoying. It looks like the recording was a chore – with some clearly recorded at a different time in a different place.

While in the end I was pleased to hear an outstanding scholar present the fruits of her labor, I sometimes wonder if the writing of Idris Elba or Letitia Wright (both mentioned in the last) will add anything.
