All Systems Red is the first science fiction book in the Murderbot Diaries series by author Martha Wells. All Systems Red addresses the ethical question of sentient robots. The protagonist is a deadly security droid that has overcome its limited program and balances self-discovery and the instinct to destroy humanity.

In a future of corporate-dominated space travel, planetary missions must be approved and delivered by the Company. Discovery Teams are accompanied by secure androids provided by the Company, for their own safety.

But in a society where the contract is awarded to the lowest bidder, safety is not a primary concern.

On a distant planet, scientists are conducting surface tests, obscured by the droid’ provided by the Company. A self-aware SecUnit hacked its own governor module and called itself “Murderbot.”

But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it’s up to the scientists and their Murderbot to find the truth.
