Dessa, a single mother, is enjoying a rare night when the weather hits. The cell towers collapse, so without even knowing if her three-year-old daughter is dead or alive, she races to get back to town.
As danger escalates in the chaotic streets, Beegie and Dessa are met by a twist of fate and an act of violence. The two form a fragile partnership, leaning on each other in ways they never thought possible, and figuring out who they really are when there’s only one goal: to just get home.
Whenever I’m not reading it, I’ve been thinking about it. What will I do. How will I react? At first, I was a bit skeptical about how quickly society fell apart, and maybe a few decades ago it was different, but what about now? Just asking someone to wear a mask or believe in science is enough to set people off with murderous rage, so I guess I’m not too surprised.
Fear is constant. Dessa is constantly trying to call her babysitter, cell phone service is the best. It was a 20-mile walk through devastated LA, and the people she encountered were more dangerous than aftershocks and ruined roads. Men are too stupid to understand why a woman might cross the street to avoid them.
Beegie has been familiar with the worst of humanity for a while. She’s just another foster child that no one seems to care much about. She and Dessa form a tough alliance to get to safety. While they were together, there were several flashbacks to their previous lives, none of which were pretty
