Mirage/ The Oregon Files, Book 9 – Audiobook Online
Mirage is the ninth literary fiction book in The Oregon Files series by author Clive Cussler and Jack Du Brul.
Special new audiobook in issue 1 of The New York Times.
In October 1943, a US destroyer departed Philadelphia and was presumed to have disappeared, the result of a Navy experiment with electromagnetic radiation. The story was considered a hoax – but now Juan Cabrillo and his Oregon colleagues are not so sure. A new weapon will soon be auctioned off, one that is very dangerous to America’s interests, and rumors link it to the great inventor Nikola Tesla, who was working for the Navy when he died in 1943. Was he responsible for the test? Is his note in the hands of the enemy? Cabrillo races to find the truth, he discovers that there is even more danger than he could have imagined. AHe realizes it, he may be too late.
The story involves the Oregon crew fighting against a corrupt Russian admiral who has discovered a naval superweapon developed by Nikola Tesla. It’s something a little different and very interesting. Cabrillo and crew are their usual superheroes, going from life-threatening situation to life-threatening situation without breaking a sweat.
The only problem I’ve really had is that about three-quarters of the book, we suddenly go from the Oregon crew chasing the villains to where they suddenly take a couple of weeks off to engage in a smuggling case. related to a billion dollars in lost US funding. It’s completely out of the left field and kills the momentum of the main story because it has nothing to do with it. Maybe it’s the seed for a new story later, but it just feels out of place and adds nothing to the book except adding 30 pages or more.
