Judging from his 2019 short story, “Randomize,” part of the Amazon Forward Collection, I’d say Andy Weir also likes McGuffins, albeit with a bias towards the microphysics genre. When challenged to illustrate how technology can impact humanity, the author chose quantum computing as his starting point.

This book is short and really heavy on details. There’s been a lot of daring scientific talk about quantum computing and pseudo-random number generation and entangled qbits and how that will affect the massive Las Vegas gambling industry. But it’s basically a basic heist story and the characters are uninteresting and uninteresting.
I think this could have done better as a full-size book with more time spent on plot and characters but this condensed version just didn’t work for me.
