They set off with a few, just backpacks with water and some food. To travel together will require trust from all parties and Santiago is used to traveling alone. None of the three travelers realize that their journey across Mexico to the border is just the beginning of their story.

Thanks to Libro for choosing this book for educators! It’s a great audiobook with a great storyteller. I was involved from the start and the description of the ICE facility is heartbreaking and will open the eyes of readers to the experiences of immigrants from Mexico and South America.

As sad as parts of this book are, I still love it and don’t want it to end! Santiago is a wonderful young man trying to escape pain and misery in Mexico. He wants to find a family, only to end up in what looks like a US prison, separated from the “family” he has found. You’ll find yourself cheering for Santiago as you read this great middle school book!
