Sea Wife
- A Novel

“Sea Wife is a gripping tale of survival at sea – but that’s just the beginning. Before it ends, Amity Gaige also attempts to probe the underpinnings of romantic love, marriage, and literary ambitions. science, politics in the Trump era, parenting and, ultimately, the essence of survival in our broken world.Gaige has a talent for thrills and her novel is mesmerizing. .” (Jennifer Egan)
“The Sea Wife brilliantly breathes life not only into the perils of life at sea, but also into the pervasive and hidden dangers of housework, motherhood and marriage. What a novel. smart, fast and thrilling.” (Lauren Groff)
From the much-acclaimed author of Schroder, a page-stopping protester of clever, sophisticated literature tells the story of a young family who escapes from the suburbs for a year-long boat trip that will change their whole life.
Juliet is failing to arrange motherhood and her confessional thesis is stalled when her husband, Michael, informs her that he wants to quit his job and buy a sailboat. With their two children – Sybil, seven, and George, two – Juliet and Michael set off for Panama, where a 44-foot sailboat awaits them. The initial result is transform; The marriage is energized, Juliet is free of depression, and the children quickly embrace the joy of being wild children at sea. Despite the stresses of being a novice sailor, the whole family learns to sail together in the ever-changing seas. Vast horizons and isolated islands give Juliet and Michael serenity – until they are tested by the unforeseen.
Sea Wife is told from a compelling dual perspective: Juliet’s first-person narration, post-journey, as she struggles to accept the life-changing events taking place at sea, and the boat’s diary Michael, offers a gripping, slow-motion story of these same unshakable events, a dialogue that reveals the missteps created by personal history and political divisions.
The Sea Wife is an advocacy novel about marriage, family and love in an unprecedentedly turbulent time. It has unforgettable power and incredible sensibility when it comes to portraying optimism, disillusionment, and survival.
There is a great tension in her writing. I love how the book goes back and forth not only between the wife’s voice and the husband’s diary, but also between the past and the present. She understands clearly about a real marriage as well as trauma and depression and I can’t stop listening.
