  • The Careful Use of Compliments

  • By: Alexander McCall Smith
  • Narrated by: Davina Porter

New York Times award-winning best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith and author of the #1 Ladies Detective Agency novel series, delivers the fourth story from the series. His charming Isabel Dalhousie, tells of a highly moral and courageous protagonist. Now she is a mother, but has an uncertain relationship with her son’s father. She also has to deal with academic politics and of course a mystery: did a Scottish painter drown, commit suicide or become the victim of a murder plot?

This book is probably the best in the entire Dalhousie series. McCall Snith writes a smooth, fast-reading mystery about art. Isabel, independently wealthy, is a modest art collector. She specializes in Scottish artists. In Scotland, that’s not a surprise. And, she has her eye on the good and valuable in Scottish art.

In this book, she attends an auction and bids for a painting by McInnes, a Scottish artist with some serious reputation in the art world. His paintings are especially valuable, as he died in an accident at sea. But she found something amusing about the picture and the other one. She began to investigate.

Unlike previous Dalhousie books, this one more than the others actually deals with a serious mystery. McCall Smith’s fluent writing style makes this a true page-turner. Combine this with some really interesting twists and turns, and the book is by far the most engaging in the series.

The book is recommended to all mystery readers and especially all lovers of McCall Smith’s books.
