It should play with the ball and with children and protect the royal family. This dog is called Foo Fu, a name that means luck and blessing. Today we call this dog the Pekingese, or sometimes the lion dog because it resembles a small lion. This legendary starter dog is now common outside the palace walls. It plays with children and protects families around the world. Those of us who get our dogs from shelters are sometimes skeptical of the magical background for our new family members. The Empress and the Legend of Foo Foo by Drs. Sambataro confirmed our suspicions. Empress Cixi was the most intelligent and favored wife of the emperor. One of her least famous but most enduring edicts was the order to breed Pekingese.

A legend has been built about the birth of this famous dog. This version of The Legend of the Queen and The Legend of Foo Foo, by Dr. Sambataro, translated and edited by Xiaolei Xie and illustrated by Martha Escobar. My favorite part is about the naughty lion dog Snowflake, who loves to hide in the snow and tease Princess Peony. This dog can warn the emperor when someone lies to him. Next time you see a pair of Chinese dog statues, be sure to notice the ball at the male dog’s feet and the puppy at the female’s feet. These statues are of Foo Foo, the legendary dog that is both playful and protective. I’m hoping for a sequel to Princess Peony and Snowflake. Younger readers will enjoy this delightful, well-written story.

This is a cute story about the creation of the Pekingese and the Foo Dogs, so if you are a dog lover or just looking for a magical story this is your book. It comes in both English and Mandarin. The story is perfect for bedtime as the kids can follow the story with the colorful pictures. Fun tip, if you pass the pages fast you can see how the Empress opens her magic scroll. Highly recommended.
