The Reader By: Bernhard Schlink – Audiobook Online

The Reader follows the life of Michael Berg, a young man in post-World War II Germany who becomes involved in a passionate love affair with an older woman named Hanna Schmitz. Despite their significant age difference, Michael and Hanna develop a deep emotional connection, exploring their sexuality and intellectual interests together. However, their relationship is abruptly terminated when Hanna disappears without a trace. Years later, Michael has grown into a successful lawyer, and he unexpectedly comes face-to-face with his past when Hanna is on trial for her involvement in war crimes as a former Nazi guard. As Michael struggles to reconcile his memories and emotions about Hanna with the knowledge of her atrocities, he must also confront his own complicity and guilt in the legacy of Nazi Germany. The story explores themes of love, guilt, shame, responsibility, and the complexities of human nature and morality in the aftermath of one of the darkest periods in history.

Praised for its curling eroticism and the moral statements it makes for its listeners, this enchanting novel is a tale of love and secrets, terror and compassion, set against the haunted backdrop of postwar Germany.

When he falls ill on his way home from school, 15-year-old Michael Berg is saved by Hanna, a woman twice his age. During the time she became his lover – then she mysteriously disappeared. When Michael next meets her, he’s a young law student, and she’s on trial for a heinous crime. As she watches her refuse to plead her innocence, Michael slowly realizes that Hanna may be hiding a secret she considers more shameful than murder.

My audio library is 900 books. This is the first time I feel so compelled to comment that I can’t help doing so. The author’s detailed examination of people’s obligations to others is based on contexts large and small, each of which can be easily identified through meticulous thought and writing. This is also the first book I’ve listened to a second time and will listen to over and over again. It is not for everyone, only for those who like to think and have a natural curiosity that is attracted to human dynamism. Thank you Berhnard Schlink for your time and effort developing your talent for our benefit.

I really enjoyed listening to it. I was surprised with the ending and felt a loss for one of the main characters. I would recommend this book to anyone.

One of the most haunting, and to some extent, most disturbing books I have read. The plot is an ingenious one – striking in its novelty, intriguing in its twists and turns. I can’t put this book down. Cheers to Schlink.
