The Rules of Magic is a novel by Alice Hoffman that follows the lives of three siblings, Franny, Jet, and Vincent Owens. The story is set in New York City during the 1960s and 70s and explores the themes of love, loss, family, and the supernatural. The Owens siblings come from a long line of witches, and they must navigate the rules and consequences of their magical powers. They are raised by their Aunt Isabelle, who teaches them the ways of magic and warns them against breaking the three main rules: they cannot fall in love, they cannot call back the dead, and they cannot harm others with their magic. The story follows the siblings as they grow up and mature, each facing their own struggles and disappointments. Franny, the oldest, falls in love with a man who is destined to die, throwing her into a deep depression. Jet, the middle child, struggles with her own identity and eventually finds love and acceptance with a woman. Vincent, the youngest, seeks ways to control his powers and find a sense of belonging. As the siblings break the rules of magic and suffer the consequences, they learn the importance of love, forgiveness, and acceptance. The novel blends historical events, magical realism, and family drama, creating a unique and captivating story that explores the complexities of human relationships and the power of love. Marin Ireland’s narration adds depth and emotion to the characters, bringing them to life for listeners.

From beloved author Alice Hoffman comes an enchanting prequel to her bestselling book Practical Magic.

Find your magic.

For the Owens family, love is a curse that dates back to 1620, when Maria Owens was accused of falling in love with the wrong man.

Hundreds of years later, in New York City in the early ’60s, as the world is about to change, Susanna Owens learns that her three children are dangerously unique. Fastidious Franny, with skin as pale as milk and hair as red as blood; The shy and beautiful Jet who can read people’s minds; and the charismatic Vincent, who starts looking for trouble the day he can walk again.

From the very beginning, Susanna set the rules for her children. No moonlight, no red shoes, no black clothes, no cats, no crows, no candles, no spellbooks. And, most importantly, never fall in love. But when her children visit their aunt Isabelle in small town Massachusetts, where the Owens family is blamed for everything wrong, they discover a family secret and begin to learn the truth about who they are. Back in New York City, each embarks on a perilous journey as they attempt to escape a clan curse.

The Owens children could not escape love no matter how hard they tried, just as they could not escape the pain of the human heart. Two beautiful sisters will grow up to be respected and sometimes terrifying aunts in Practical Magic while Vincent, their beloved brother, will leave an unexpected legacy. Thrilling and subtle, real and fantastical, The Rules of Magic is a story about the power of love that reminds us that the only cure for being human is being true to yourself.

I really like this book. It’s a prequel to Practical Magic and we get to learn more about the funny aunt as well as the rest of the family. The story takes place in the 60s and 70s and at the height of the Vietnam War. A lot of things in this story really resonated with me. My father was drafted into the army during that war and my parents were married in 1969 and I was born in January 1970. Like the Owen family, we have witnessed great loss and tragedy. The theme of the story is “love more” which is perfect. I would recommend this book.
