Born Sarah Breedlove, she was the first to be born free in her family. She married Charles Joseph Walker and became known as Madam C. J. Walker, a name she would later use for her hair care products.
After talking to her brothers, who are barbers, and having problems with hair loss, she developed a recipe for a scalp infection. She started her own line of hair care products to do things like reduce dandruff, grow hair longer, smoothen hair, or prevent baldness. Her company employs thousands of female door-to-door salespeople from across the United States and the Caribbean.
She supports the African American community by donating $1000 to a new YMCA building in Indianapolis, funding scholarships to the Tuskegee Institute and the Daytona Normal Institute for Girls. She became a patron of the arts during the early years of the Harlem Renaissance.
