The content of the book is about Aleut Kate Shugak leaving her job as a sex crime investigator for the Anchorage DA office. She returned to her father in a national park in inland Alaska. In the midst of one of the bitterest Decembers, ex-boss – and ex-lovers – Jack Morgan shows up with an FBI agent watching. A Park ranger with powerful relatives has gone missing, investigator Jack sent to search for him is also missing.

Kate, along with her half-wolf half-hussy woman Mutt, leave her wilderness hideout to follow an icy trail through the Park. Twenty thousand square miles of mountains and tundra are sparsely populated with hunters, fishermen, fishers, hunters, pilots and landlords. Her formidable grandmother and native chief, Ekaterina Shugak resists Kate’s investigation. Her cousin Martin could be Kate’s prime suspect. Local soldier Jim Chopin is more interested in Kate than in her investigation. The sanctuary she sought after five and a half years in the urban jungle could be more deadly than anything she left on the streets of Anchorage.
