There are things in our life which we choose for ourselves and then there are those things which are chosen for us by fate. Cordelia Carstairs never wanted a life of action; she just wanted to form a relationship with her childhood friend James. All of it does not seem to be possible because she happens to be one of the Shadowhunters who are trained since childhood for a war. Cordelia was trained and taught to fight against demons but she never thought she would face those ugly creatures in real life.

Her father gets trapped in a deadly case soon after the completion of her training after which her life changes totally. The girl’s mother wants to make her a bride as soon as possible but she is not looking forward to this proposal. Her old friends James and Lucie allow her to see an entirely different side of London which she never knew existed. On this other side of London vampires, wizards and other magical creatures exist in complete harmony. Cordelia tries to find her place between all of this and then the mysterious demons strike London.

Author Cassandra Clare portrays a new breed of demons here that are not afraid of daylight at all. Here the story looks exactly like City of Bones and City of Ashes as in those novels the author has talked about the same kind of Shadowhunters. Novel talks about the formation of a team but this team is currently not aware of its true powers. Finty Williams’ narration presents the trio as a group of confident fellows but they are to some extent worried at heart.
