The novel opens with a surprising conundrum. In Discworld, the eighth son of the eighth son is always a witch. In the town of Bad Ass, the sorcerer Drum Billet is waiting to impart his scepter and power to a newborn boy. Drum fails to check whether the baby is actually a boy or not, and accidentally transfers his staff and powers to a girl named Eskarina or Esk for short. Discworld has its first sorceress and no one knows what to do with her. This is truly hilarious, brilliantly written, and truly a joy to read.

Granny Weatherwax, Discworld’s most famous wizard, has plenty of experience ignoring the status quo. With Granny’s help, Esk sneaks into the magical Unseen University and befriends the apprentice sorcerer Simon.

But power is unpredictable, and these bright young students soon find themselves in a whole new dimension of trouble. Let the battle of the sexes begin
