Harlequin/ The Grail Quest, Book 1 – Audiobook Online

Harlequin is the first literary fiction book in The Grail Quest series by author Bernard Cornwell.
1342. The English, led by Edward III, are ravaging the French countryside. The army may be led by the King, but it is the archers, the commoners, that are Britain’s secret weapon. The French call them Harlequins.

Thomas of Hookton was one of these archers. He’s also on a personal mission: Avenge his father’s death and retrieve a stolen relic. Thomas sets out on a quest that will lead him through fields covered in smoke and fire burned by the aggressive British. Finally the two armies faced each other on a hillside near the village of Crécy.

The current novel is set in the time of King Edward III, when British troops are once again on the continent to fight the French. Historical research is good, and the novel is well written.
The main character is a fictional English archer, William of Hookton, who joins the British army in France after the people of his village are massacred by the French.

He has two missions, find and kill his father’s killer and retrieve a religious relic stolen from his village church.
William initially found himself in Brittany as part of the Earl of Northampton’s campaign, where he distinguished himself at La Roche-Derien, but also feuded and was accused of murder. Fleeing from enemies and accusations of murder, he eventually joined the Earl of Normandy, took part in the battle at Caen, was wounded, recovered, rejoined the Earl and served in the Battle of Crécy where the novel theory ends.
