Like Dewey Lambdin’s previous books, this story introduces British Navy Commander Alan Lewrie into an area rarely covered by other novels related to this historical period. Commander Lewrie took Jester to the Adriatic as part of a squadron sent to intercept French trade.

The book provides a good account of the situation, including the troubles between ethnic and religious groups in the region. Current troubles in the Balkans are carried back 200 years ago, with the Serbs being the villains and basic documentation of some origins. With its graphic depictions of brutality, this is not a children’s book. The account is interspersed with details of Napoleon’s campaigns in Italy and his rise to power. Lewrie’s ex reappears, along with a few old school friends from Harrow, and a new woman who makes him tempted to be away from home and away from home.
