Library at Mount Char By Scott Hawkins
Library at Mount Char is a novel by author Scott Hawkins. The content of the story revolves around Miss Carolyn who is no different from the people around her. Carolyn knows how to use phones, guacamole, cigarettes and steak.. She’s an ordinary American. She and the rest of the children were raised by a father.
When she and dozens of other children were raised by a man they called Father.
Dad can do strange things. He calls light from darkness. Sometimes He brings the dead back to life. In the years since Father adopted her, Carolyn hasn’t gone out much. She and her adopted siblings were raised according to Father’s ancient Pelapi custom. They studied the books in his library and learned some of the secrets behind the ancient power. They wondered if the evil tutor could secretly be God? Now Father is missing. And if God really is dead, the only thing that matters is who will inherit His library – and who has the power over all of creation.
As Carolyn gathers the tools she needs for the upcoming battle, fierce competitors for this prize will be up against her. But can Carolyn win? What she doesn’t realize is that her victory could come at an unacceptable price – because when she became a god, she forgot a lot about being human.
Here are the top 3 reviews and comments that readers love about this fascinating book.
01- The novel is about children raised by a god in a vast library, each with their own quest (healing, violence, animals, math, language, etc.) when they mature. Revenge and love, and it raises the question of agency versus “fate”. Scott Hawkins He gave the main character, Carolyn, an arc that was satisfying to see built and accomplished. The story exhibits an appreciation of old mythological archetypes with a sufficient introduction of the strange philosophical and mathematical theories that underlie the reader’s imagination.
02- Novel with strange and interesting things. The story is dark, confusing, and at the same time magical. There is not a dull moment in this book. Epic battles of lions, to savage dogs, to psychotic characters, the Library at Mount Char offers everything.
Its moments of horror, are extremely engaging and it is impossible to put it down. Hawkins has a vast imagination. Now I’m a little terrified of that man. This is a book worth reading and enjoying.
03- Scott Hawkins wrote the weirdest book I’ve ever read. The story follows librarian Carolyn as she and her “brothers” and “sisters” try to find their missing “Father”. Librarians are responsible for knowing everything about a given topic. One is knowledgeable in all things medical, the other is a master of all known wars. Carolyn can speak every current language, dead language, she speaks to trees, animals and even storms. Hawkins writes in a very clear and direct voice. He can convey extremely strange ideas and concepts clearly.
Looking at all that is known, the final act of the story takes a truly strange turn. I don’t think it will work but in the end for satisfaction. This book is weird, funny, unique, and well worth your time.
